'A fascinating deep dive' Jeremy Deller From the illicit reggae
blues dances and acid-rock free festivals of the 1970s, through the
ecstasy-fuelled Second Summer of Love in 1988, to the increasingly
corporate dance music culture of the post-Covid era, Party Lines is
a groundbreaking new history of UK dance music, exploring its
pivotal role in the social, political and economic shifts on which
modern Britain has been built. Taking in the Victorian moralism of
the Thatcher years, the far-reaching restrictions of the Criminal
Justice Act in 1994, and the resurgence of illegal raves during the
Covid-19 pandemic, Party Lines charts an ongoing conflict, fought
in basement clubs, abandoned warehouses and sunlit fields, between
the revolutionary potential of communal sound and the reactionary
impulses of the British establishment. Brought to life with
stunning clarity and depth, this is social and cultural history at
its most immersive, vital and shocking.

This book is a comprehensive review of the genera of Burseraceae, a
moderate-sized family of flowering plants, found in tropical East
Africa. It presents information on their character, occurrence,
habitat, phenotypic variations and distribution of each of the
species under these genera.
This authoritative research review presents and discusses carefully
selected scholarly articles that describe and examine the
principles of international sales law, as set forth in the United
Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods
(CISG). These seminal pieces reflect various viewpoints of authors
from different countries and legal systems, and offer a range of
distinct methodological approaches to legal analysis. The review is
an invaluable source of reference, providing the reader with both
an international and an interdisciplinary perspective on the CISG
and its application.
Theatrical Design and Production is a comprehensive and practical
survey that examines the technical and design aspects of play
production, including scene design and construction, lighting,
sound, costume, and makeup. Design is presented as both an art
closely integrated with the director's, actor's, and playwright's
visions, and a craft that provides practical solutions for the
physical manipulation of stage space.
The Invisible City explores urban spaces from the perspective of a
traveller, writer, and creator of theatre to illuminate how cities
offer travellers and residents theatrical visions while also
remaining mostly invisible, beyond the limits of attention. The
book explores the city as both stage and content in three parts.
Firstly, it follows in pattern Italo Calvino's novel Invisible
Cities, wherein Marco Polo describes cities to the Mongol emperor
Kublai Khan, to produce a constellation of vignettes recalling
individual cities through travel writing and engagement with
artworks. Secondly, Gillette traces the Teatro Potlach group and
its ongoing immersive, site-specific performance project Invisible
Cities, which has staged performances in dozens of cities across
Europe and the Americas. The final part of the book offers useful
exercises for artists and travellers interested in researching
their own invisible cities. Written for practitioners, travellers,
students, and thinkers interested in the city as site and source of
performance, The Invisible City mixes travelogue with criticism and
cleverly combines philosophical meditations with theatrical
pedagogy.

As the field of translation studies has developed, translators and
translation scholars have become more aware of the unacknowledged
ideologies inherent both in texts themselves and in the mechanisms
that affect their circulation. This book both analyses the
translation of queerness and applies queer thought to issues of
translation. It sheds light on the manner in which heteronormative
societies influence the selection, reading and translation of texts
and pays attention to the means by which such heterosexism might be
subverted. It considers the ways in which queerness can be
repressed, ignored or made invisible in translation, and shows how
translations might expose or underline the queerness - or the
homophobic implications - of a given text. Balancing the
theoretical with the practical, this book investigates what is
culturally at stake when particular texts are translated from one
culture to another, raising the question of the relationship
between translation, colonialism and globalization. It also takes
the insights derived from intercultural translation studies and
applies them to other fields of cultural criticism. The first
multi-focus, in-depth study on translating queer, translating
queerly and queering translation, this book will be of interest to
scholars working in the fields of gender and sexuality, queer
theory and queer studies, literature, film studies and translation
studies.
Spatial cognition is a broad field of enquiry, emerging from a wide
range of disciplines and incorporating a wide variety of paradigms
that have been employed with human and animal subjects. This volume
is part of a two- volume handbook reviewing the major paradigms
used in each of the contributors' research areas.; This volume
considers the issues of neurophysiological aspects of spatial
cognition, the assessment of cognitive spatial deficits arising
from neural damage in humans and animals, and the observation of
spatial behaviours in animals in their natural habitats.; This
handbook should be of interest to new and old students alike. The
student new to spatial research can be brought up-to- speed with a
particular range of techniques, made aware of the background and
pitfalls of particular approaches, and directed toward useful
sources. For seasoned researchers, the handbook provides a rapid
scan of the available tools that they might wish to consider as
alternatives when wishing to answer a particular "spatial" research
problem.

Knowing Britten is a vivid and insightful account of Steuart
Bedford's long association with both Britten the man and his music
The conductor and pianist Steuart Bedford (199-2021) could not
remember a time when he did not know Benjamin Britten. His mother,
Lesley Duff, sang with the English Opera Group in the premieres of
The Rape of Lucretia and Albert Herrring in the late 1940s, and the
family was closely involved with Britten and Pears for many years.
Following his music studies and time on the music staff at
Glyndebourne, Bedford joined the English Opera Group, gradually
becoming Britten's trusted surrogate conductor. As Britten's health
began to fail, Before took on responsibility for the premiere of
Death in Venice, including its US premiere at the Metropolitan
Opera, New York, and the dramatic cantata Phaedra among others.
This book advances current literature on the role and place of
animals in sport and society. It explores different forms of
sporting spaces, examines how figures of animals have been used to
racialize the human athlete, and encourages the reader to think
critically about animal ethics, animals in space, time and place,
and the human-animal relationship. The chapters highlight
persistent dichotomies in the use of and collaboration with animals
for sport, and present strategies for moving forward in the study
of interspecies relations.
Queer in Europe takes stock of the intellectual and social status
and treatment of queer in the New Europe of the twenty-first
century, addressing the ways in which the Anglo-American term and
concept 'queer' is adapted in different national contexts, where it
takes on subtly different overtones, determined by local political
specificities and intellectual traditions. Bringing together
contributions by carefully chosen experts, this book explores key
aspects of queer in a range of European national contexts, namely:
Belgium, Cyprus, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy,
The Nordic Region, The Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Spain.
Rather than prescribing a universalizing definition, the book
engages with a wide spectrum of what is meant by 'queer', as each
chapter negotiates the contested border between direct queer
activist action based on identity categories, and more plural queer
strategies that call these categories into question. The first
volume in English devoted to the exploration of queer in Europe,
this book makes an important intervention in contemporary queer
studies.
This title was first published in 2003. This volume contains essays
by prominent commentators on topics in commercial law. It addresses
the increasing harmonization of international commercial law and
the essays demonstrate different methodologies used in analysing
commercial law, such as economic and jurisprudential approaches.
